Case to hold the Loop Current Tester, and a bunch more Testers. If a user at a customer says they can’t hear on a call occasionally, there’s not much you can do about it. It’s probably the long distance provider on one end or the other. If only a single user at a customer is complaining that they can’t hear on a regular basis, an Amplified Handset will probably help that user. If all or several users are complaining that they can’t hear on a lot of calls, or that the outside party can’t hear them, it’s time to do some testing to see what’s wrong. I’ve personally carried one brand or another of a Circuit Loss Tester for many years. I don’t know how a repairman can figure out what’s going on without one, and Can’t Hear complaints are pretty common. If you’re a repairman, you’ll have a pretty good idea of how a phone line sounds just by listening to it in your Butt-set, since that’s what you do for a living. If the line is low, you really need to know how low it is, so you can go to battle with the Phone Company. Through the years my ear has gotten pretty good at knowing if the level of a phone line is OK or not by simply calling a 1KC tone at the Phone Company in downtown Chicago
How Two-line Phones Work
Adding a second line to your home is an easy task that even the least experienced do-it-yourselfer can do without costly interference from a telephone technician. In Part 1 , showed how to hook up your second phone line to existing telephone jacks. But, what do you do if you want the service in a room with no phone jacks? It’s not as hard to do as you may think.
I am working on hooking it up to an arduino project, and I was able to get the dial and hook switches figured out pretty easily. I cannot really figure out how the ringer works, or how to wire it up. It is an old western electric C4A ringer.
Doing your own telephone wiring Note: I’m not familiar with the phone wiring conventions outside the U. In years gone past, it was the responsibility of the phone company not only to bring phone service to your house but to do the phone wiring within your house as well. This is no longer the case. When you order phone service to your house, the local phone company installs a network interface device, a sturdy grey plastic box usually mounted either in your basement or on an outside wall.
You can do your inside wiring yourself, or you can pay the local phone company or a third party such as an electrician to do it for you.
How to Wire a Telephone Jack
If you have the newer wiring, attach them as follows Make a small “hook” in the wire with the needle nose pliers and place the wire under the screw. Make sure the wire is wrapped around the screw in a clockwise direction so it will stay under the screw when you tighten it. Now that you have your phone jack wiring complete, you must now hook the telephone wire up to the connecting block. Again, depending on the age of you home, the conecting block could be as simple as two screws.

If you have DSL, you can still use a fax machine on your line with some special equipment which may have already been supplied by your DSL provider and a few easy steps. These filters are small, in-line filters that are plugged between your telephone line and the telephone wall jack. If you have any extra DSL filters lying around, you will not need to purchase an additional one. If you do not have a line filter readily available, they can be obtained at most chain retailers or electronics stores for a nominal amount.
Unplug your fax machine telephone line. Your fax machine is connected to the telephone wall jack by a thin and most likely flat wire with a modular plug at each end. This wire, known as an RJ wire or just a telephone wire , has a small plastic clip that holds it into the telephone line jack on your fax machine, and an identical clip holding it into your wall jack. You do not need to remove this wire from your fax machine, but you will want to remove it from the wall jack by squeezing the plastic clip and gently pulling the wire out of the jack.
Plug the DSL line filter into the wall jack.

Can’t find a solution to your problem? Post a question in our Forums. Wiring a Phone Jack Even when the phone company smugly offers you the option of wiring your own phone jacks, I have yet to encounter reliable information on exactly how to do this correctly. You would think that when it’s wired correctly that you could look at the jack, note the color combinations and then at your new home wire the jack the same and it would work.

Also, never work on a phone line during a thunderstorm, since lightning can travel down the wire causing serious injury. To disconnect the line, find the telephone interface box which is usually mounted on an outside wall where the phone lines runs into your house. Open the customer access panel and unplug the test jack.
On older interface boxes without a test jack, unscrew the terminals and detach the wires, remembering which one went on which terminal. Remove the jack from the wall, noting which colored wires are hooked up to the terminals so you can match them to the new one.

How to Wire a Telephone Every home has a phone box, also known as a Network Interface Device, regardless of whether or not the home has an active land line. Simply having this box, however, does not mean that there is working phone service inside the house. It is necessary to run telephone wire from the house to this box in order to have a working phone line. It is completely legal and cost effective to wire a telephone line yourself. There is no permit or inspection required, as the phone wiring that runs from the box to the house is your property.
You can save a great deal of money by wiring a telephone yourself instead of hiring the phone company or an electrician to do it for you. Steps 1 Locate the Network Interface Device box on the outside of your house. This is a gray or tan box that measures roughly 8 by 12 inches. The Network Interface Device box is where the telephone wire from the phone company terminates, and also where the phone wiring going into the house will connect to the phone company line.
The plugs look just like the phone jack that you plug your phone into inside of your house. There will be a line plugged into each modular plug for each phone company line that runs to your house. The pair of screw posts will contain one red screw and one green screw. These posts are where your new wiring will connect with the phone company wiring. Before you begin your wiring project, unplug the phone company line that is plugged into the jack inside the box.

Specifying rings to answer You can specify how many rings should occur before the All—in—One printer automatically answers an incoming call. This setting applies only if the fax auto—answer feature is set to On. The rings—to—answer setting is critically important for you if an answering machine shares the same phone line as your All-in-One printer, because the answering machine must answer the phone first. If this parameter is not set correctly, the answering machine cannot record any incoming calls.
If you use a voice messaging service instead of an answering machine, this option is not effective. See Setting fax auto—answer below and Specifying a distinctive ring for fax auto—answer. The All—in—One printer monitors every call into the phone line, including calls picked up by the answering machine. If it detects incoming fax tones, it will receive the fax. It ignores any call that does not transmit the fax tones and allows the answering machine to record it.
